Starting or returning to the gym can feel daunting, especially if you have never been. With a bit of preparation, it can become a positive and empowering part of your routine.

1. Start with a plan.
Think about your goals – improving strength or mobility, or building regular exercise into your routine. Having a clear plan helps you feel more confident and stay on track.

2. Begin gradually.
You don’t need to do everything at once. Start by familiarising yourself with the layout of the gym and the equipment, for example, where are the bathrooms and changing rooms, where can I leave my things, etc.

3. Focus on technique and safety.
Ask someone to show you how a few pieces of gym equipment work and practice these exercise with no weight or using very light resistance. Join an induction session if the gym offers one.

4. Dress for comfort.
Wear clothes and shoes that feel comfortable and supportive. Bring some water and a towel with you.

5. Go at your own pace.
Everyone at the gym is working on their own journey. Try not to compare yourself to others. Celebrate each small improvement, whether it’s walking for slightly longer on the treadmill or trying out a new piece of equipment safely.

6. Make it enjoyable.
Choose activities you like, listen to music or podcasts, and if possible, exercise with a friend or group. Enjoyment is the best motivator for long-term success.

Remember, the goal isn't power or perfection, it is progress. Each visit builds confidence, strength and momentum towards a healthier, happier you.
